A holiday shopping trip can double as a museum visit at the 12th Annual Holiday Market in Altus. On December 1, local artists will sell their work at the Museum of the Western Prairie, where visitors can also tour the exhibits during the event.
The market’s advertised selection spans paintings, jewelry, pottery and handcrafted leather goods. It is an opportunity to shop for art by local makers in the museum setting; refreshments will be served as well.
The museum’s account of southwest Oklahoma reaches from the formation of the Wichita Mountains to irrigated farming and Altus Air Force Base. Its history also follows the Western Trail, the cattle-driving route that crossed the region after the Civil War. Those stories provide the setting for the market, rather than a stated theme for the artists’ work.

The museum connects regional change to water as well as land. Its history describes the development of irrigation around Lake Altus, completed in 1947, alongside the earlier effects of drought and the expansion of settlement on Native communities.
For visitors interested in the exhibits beyond market night, the museum offers a free audio tour. Its regular daytime admission is separate from the free holiday market.
