New York Backpackers’ Nov. 12 gathering pairs Bradley Chermside’s Camino memoir with a conversation about treks completed and routes still on the wish list.
All times are local to the venue · America/New York
The book follows a long walk across northern Spain; the evening’s conversation is planned to range beyond its pages, with participants invited to share their own hiking experiences and future plans.
The selection is Bradley Chermside’s The Only Way Is West: A Thru-Hiking Adventure, a travel memoir about hiking the Camino de Santiago. The event description presents the journey as hundreds of miles on foot through northern Spain, giving the group a shared subject: what a long-distance trek can demand, and what unexpected turns may become part of it.
That route is the starting point, not a test of participants’ credentials. The gathering is framed as a book conversation as well as a chance to talk about experiences beyond the memoir.

Attendees are invited to bring stories from multi-day treks or well-known trails, as well as ideas for hikes they hope to take. The listing says prior thru-hiking experience is not required, so a long-distance trail record is not a condition of joining the discussion.
The format gives readers room to connect the book’s journey with different kinds of outdoor experience: a finished trek, a memorable day on a trail, or a route that remains an aspiration.
