The University of Illinois trio behind the 1999 self-titled debut played no more than a dozen shows before splitting. Its reunited, expanded story gives context for a New Haven date whose listing confirms a start time, not a setlist.

American Football’s first run was brief; the afterlife of its debut was not. The band played at most a dozen shows before splitting, but the 1999 record went on to become closely associated with Midwest emo. The reunited group is listed at College Street Music Hall on Friday, Dec. 18, 2026.
The original trio brought together Mike Kinsella, a former Cap’n Jazz drummer who took on vocals and guitar, guitarist Steve Holmes, and drummer and trumpeter Steve Lamos. Their initial stretch as a band lasted at most twelve performances; they went separate ways as college was coming to an end. Their self-titled debut came out in September 1999 on Polyvinyl Record Co., a locally founded label.
The record’s audience grew well beyond that small first run. Listener recommendations and online music-sharing communities helped keep it in circulation over the years, and the album became an influential touchstone for Midwest emo.

American Football reunited in 2014. Mike Kinsella’s cousin Nate joined on bass and multiple instruments, making the group a quartet. Two more self-titled albums followed, in 2016 and 2019, as the band’s sound widened toward post-rock, post-punk and more experimental influences.
The band’s current official site promotes LP4 as out now. That continuing catalog matters when approaching a group often identified with its debut, but it does not indicate which songs will be played in New Haven.
