Big Bay Boom is a celebration spread around San Diego Bay, not a show with one front gate. The organizer lists Shelter Island, Harbor Island, North Embarcadero and Coronado Ferry Landing among its viewing areas for the July 4 event.
Where you watch can shape the rest of the evening. North Embarcadero is a useful starting point for rail travelers: the event’s transportation guide places both the Coaster and Santa Fe Depot a few blocks from the Embarcadero. Shelter Island is another named viewing area, but its guide cautions that parking there fills early.
The organizer also promotes separate outings, including dinner cruises and viewing parties. Those are distinct from the free public celebration; check directly with the host about admission and any booking terms before making plans.

Founder and executive producer Sandy Purdon helped launch the first Big Bay Boom in 2001 with two fireworks barges, after waterfront businesses and the Port supported the idea. For 2026, the Port announced four barges firing in coordination with a musical simulcast, and presented the event with Purdon and Fleet Week San Diego.
The 2026 announcement also described sound and wildlife monitoring, water-quality testing and cleanup around the bay. Environmental requirements are part of the conversation about what comes next: the Port is exploring future celebrations using fireworks, drones or a combination. Although the event website describes a four-barge fireworks show, the final 2027 format has not been confirmed.
