Billing/Accounts Receivable CGAT course examines money owed to municipalities
When a municipality provides a product or service on credit, its accounting must distinguish what the customer owes from what has been paid. That is the focus of Billing/Accounts Receivable - CGAT Course, a one-day class at Bryant Conference Center on November 18, 2026.
Accounting for money coming in
The course introduces techniques for recording amounts owed and payments received for municipal products or services supplied on credit. Its focus is different from the CGAT series’ Purchasing/Accounts Payable elective, which addresses recording and generating payments for an entity’s own credit purchases.
The distinction may help prospective participants choose between the electives: receivables concern customer obligations to the municipality, while payables concern the entity’s obligations to suppliers or other payees.

How the class fits the certificate
Billing/Accounts Receivable provides six elective hours toward the Certified Governmental Accounting Technician certificate awarded by the Government Finance Officers Association of Alabama. The association sponsors the broader CGAT program, which also covers budgeting, payroll and other accounting topics.
To earn the certificate, participants complete 24 hours of study: two core courses and two electives within two years of program enrollment. General Ledger and Fund Accounting are the required core courses. The training is not restricted to association members; program candidates need an interest in governmental accounting and a high school diploma or GED.
