Central Library Tour: a walking visit to a Portland landmark
Portland’s Central Library has been a public building since 1913, but it has not stood still. The Central Library Tour offers a 45-minute walk through the building on Saturday, October 31, 2026, with no registration required.
A library built to last, then adapted
Central Library replaced the Stark Street Library when it opened in September 1913. Portland architect Albert E. Doyle, of Doyle, Patterson & Beach, designed the building. A major renovation and seismic retrofit followed from 1994 to 1997; during that work, the library operated from a temporary location called TransCentral.
The building closed again for updates in 2023 and reopened in 2024. Changes included improved ADA access, a teen space and a terrace. The library also describes lower shelves for easier browsing, translated wayfinding signs and automated equipment for checking in and sorting materials.

Details in the building
Among the features the library highlights are a bronze tree in the Children’s Library by Dana Lynn Louis and Barbara Eisworth, a black granite grand staircase and a second-floor light fixture by Larry Kirkland. These offer a sense of the building’s art and architecture, although the tour’s individual stops have not been specified.
