At Chatfield Farms, the main choice is how far to wander: a walk through gardens and the historic ranch, a longer loop on the 2.5-mile trail network, or time set aside for birdwatching. The grounds are open for regular hours on Friday, Nov. 27, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no date-specific activity schedule listed.
Chatfield Farms is a 700-acre native-plant refuge and working farm along Deer Creek in southern Jefferson County, managed in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Its 2.5 miles of nature trails connect a broader visit to gardens and historic buildings; the setting is also designated a birding hotspot on Cornell University’s eBird community-science site.
Bring binoculars if birdwatching is part of your plan. The Gardens recommends them, but the Free Day listing does not announce a guided bird walk, and seeing particular birds is never guaranteed. This is access to the grounds at your own pace, not a scheduled program.

The property’s agricultural role is more than a backdrop: the Gardens’ Community Supported Agriculture program grows more than six acres of vegetables for subscribers and farm stands. That does not mean the working areas are all open to visitors. The experimental five-acre Solar Garden, an agrivoltaic array combining solar panels and farming, is specifically closed to the public.
Buildings on the grounds date to the 1800s. The Hildebrand Ranch house is closed for repairs, so plan to see the outdoor grounds rather than enter the house. The venue also says its pumpkin patch is closed.

The Gardens’ general visitor guidance suggests allowing up to two hours for the curated gardens and historic ranch; exploring the outer trails usually adds time, depending on pace and stops. That estimate is general planning advice, not a timed itinerary for Nov. 27.
The butterfly habitat is seasonal, and the available information does not confirm whether it will be open on this date. The visitor guide includes it in a typical visit description, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed attraction for this Free Day.

The Free Days listing showed Chatfield Farms tickets available when checked Oct. 31, 2026. Check the booking page for current availability: the Gardens says Free Days can sell out and there are no onsite tickets on sold-out days. Tickets are released in rolling three-month periods on the first of the month.
Chatfield Farms also has free daytime admission Nov. 2, 2026, through Feb. 28, 2027, but visitors still need to reserve a free ticket. Free Day admission covers regular Gardens hours and excludes ticketed classes and events. The venue says Trail of Lights requires a separate ticket; that does not establish that the event is running on Nov. 27.
York Street is a separate Gardens location, and its Nov. 27 Free Day is sold out. Use the Chatfield Farms ticket listing for this visit.

Bring drinking water; sturdy shoes and long pants are recommended because of irritating vegetation, including poison hemlock and poison ivy, and the possibility of snake or insect bites. Report snake sightings to staff. Stay on trails; do not pick flowers, enter garden beds, climb trees, disturb nesting sites, or feed or touch wildlife. Do not wade in water features or cross them when frozen.
Visitors may bring food and nonalcoholic drinks, but picnic seating is limited; the Gardens suggests bringing a blanket. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Pets are not allowed, although service animals are permitted; pets may not be left in cars.
The site prohibits smoking, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers; fires; fishing and hunting; loud music; and balls, bicycles, scooters, skateboards, frisbees and sleds. Balloons, potted floor plants, trees, florist-cut flowers and hard-to-pick-up materials such as rice, glitter, beads, birdseed, confetti and flower petals are also prohibited. Do not touch or climb on artwork. Weapons, real or imitation, are not allowed; costume masks that obscure the entire face are not permitted for guests over 17. Personal photos and videos are allowed. For commercial or professional photography, consult the Gardens’ Photo Policy for permit information; permits are required for commercial and portrait photography.
