The Portland branch’s adult Chess Club explicitly welcomes beginners. The library lists it as a Games program, but doesn’t describe whether the meetings include instruction, how play is organized or whether chess sets are provided.
The listing’s clearest guidance for newcomers is its welcome to beginners. Beyond identifying the event as an adult Games program, the library doesn’t say whether participants will receive instruction or play in a particular format. If either detail affects your plans, call the Portland branch at (502) 574-1744.

As of Nov. 1, the remaining November meetings are both assigned to the Media Lab. The Oct. 19 session has passed; its separate listing named the Auditorium, so don’t use that earlier room information for an upcoming date.
