On October 29, Mission Community Market’s usual Thursday food shop takes on a seasonal focus: Foodwise highlights flowers and foods for Día de los Muertos ofrendas, alongside Halloween crafts for children. The celebration brings those additions into a neighborhood farmers market rather than setting them apart as a separate fair.
Flowers and food for the occasion
Foodwise points shoppers toward locally grown marigolds from Medrano’s Flowers and food from local makers for ofrendas, the offerings or altars associated with Día de los Muertos. Its holiday picks also offer a way to shop for a meal or a sweet alongside the week’s produce.
Norte 54 is highlighted for seasonal pan dulce and las calaveras cookies, while Tonantzin’s specials include traditional mole and chocolate caliente. Casa Bonampak’s pop-up adds papel picado and other Mexican decorations; the fair-trade importer also plans life-size lotería cards for photos.
For ideas beyond the holiday table, look for the orange Foodwise Seasonal Spotlight tent. It is offering free samples of fall fruit, with recipes and cooking tips to take into the rest of the market shop.

Crafts with a Halloween invitation
Foodwise invites children to come in costume for family-friendly crafts. The specific projects and a separate craft time have not been announced, so families with a tight schedule may want to check with the market.
DJ Lamont is scheduled at the Little Mission Studio stage during the latter part of the market. That appearance is part of a wider music partnership with Little Mission Studio, an independent Mission District music school that helps curate the market’s performers.

A celebration within the weekly shop
Mission Community Market began as a grassroots neighborhood effort in 2010, and Foodwise took over its operation in 2018. The seasonal market supports about 25 small local farms and businesses, alongside community programs.
Its layout makes a useful distinction for shoppers: certified farmers sell agricultural products directly, while an adjoining non-certified area accommodates items such as bread and prepared foods. Foodwise publishes weekly updates for anyone looking for a particular seller; the directory alone is not a guarantee that a seller will attend on October 29.
