Start with cultural activities at JUMP, see an exhibition of textured paintings and sculpture, or make time for a mountain-running presentation.

On November 5, Downtown Boise First Thursday stretches across independently planned stops rather than following a single evening timetable. JUMP gathers several activities under one roof, while galleries, shops and other venues offer reasons to make a few stops downtown.
JUMP’s lobby features community altar displays and a Día de Muertos craft for remembering loved ones. In the Inspire Studio, the Boise Cultural Showcase is an international craft fair with clothing, crafts and jewelry. Lotería, the Mexican bingo game, takes place in The Loft; families interested in Family Boogie should start early, because it ends at 5:45 p.m.
A different kind of participation awaits in the Play Studio: Writers Detention with novelist Bridget Foley. The weekly drop-in workshop sets aside 90 minutes for individual writing, followed by an optional conversation about the practice of writing rather than critiques of participants’ projects. Bring a notebook or laptop and be prepared to put your phone away. Prompts are available, and writers of all experience levels are welcome.
JUMP’s larger gathering is all ages, but Writers Detention has its own age rule: participants must be 18 or older, or at least 13 and accompanied by an adult. The Pioneer lobby also hosts ReStorying Boise with Global Lounge, a Boise nonprofit whose work includes cultural preservation and education.

At Idaho Art Gallery, 702 W Idaho St #105, the opening reception for Standing Tall runs from 5 to 9 p.m. and introduces René Romero Schuler’s semi-abstract paintings and sculptures. Her figures are built through layers of material worked by hand—scraped, carved and incised—and the exhibition considers the experiences that shape women’s lives. The show remains on view November 3–28, so the First Thursday reception is one way to see it, not the only opportunity.
For a look at work in progress, painter Kristen Edwards welcomes visitors to Studio Blue, at 212 N Ninth St, inside Boise Boba and up the stairs. Her finished and developing paintings emphasize texture; originals and prints are listed alongside commissions.

Idaho Mountain Touring’s Trails and Tales presentation brings Joelle Vaught and David Faught together to discuss mountain running and adventures in Slovenia. The free, all-ages event also includes a raffle benefiting the Idaho Humane Society, with Ridge to Rivers sharing information about Boise trails. Pizza, beer and nonalcoholic drinks are available for purchase; the venue suggests bringing a camp chair.
For a participatory late stop, Fred Astaire Dance Studios Boise offers demonstrations and a free newcomer group variety class before social dancing. No partner or previous experience is required.
