What can a museum’s recent acquisitions reveal when they are shown together? At November’s DTLA ArtNight, MOCA visitors can explore that question with Bennett Simpson, who organized In These Times: Recent Acquisitions at MOCA with curatorial assistant Ariana Rizo.
In These Times brings together purchases and gifts added to MOCA’s holdings over the preceding five years. Rather than arranging the exhibition as a simple acquisition timeline, the museum groups works by theme: galleries consider representations of Los Angeles, group portraiture, recent abstract painting and painstaking detail.
The range of materials is part of the story. MOCA lists Alex Israel’s acrylic painting Movie Theaters, Magdalena Suarez Frimkess’s glazed stoneware Chariot, and Julie Mehretu and Nairy Baghramian’s TRANSpaintings (green ecstatic), made with ink and acrylic on polyester mesh. Other artists in the exhibition include Charles Gaines, Henry Taylor and Yolanda López.

Simpson’s public walkthrough offers a chance to hear from one of the exhibition’s organizers; MOCA also plans a free photo booth. The museum describes DTLA ArtNight as a shared evening with The Broad and other neighboring institutions. Check those venues’ own listings before planning additional stops.
