Sven has an awkward announcement for his friend Ole: he no longer wants to be his best man. In Eelpout, that revelation lands during a bachelor-party gathering in an ice-fishing shack on Lake Mille Lacs, where a giant talking fish is also part of the story.
Ole and Sven have gathered at their friend Lars’s shack ahead of Ole’s marriage to Lena. Sven’s change of heart puts their friendship under pressure at what was supposed to be a celebration.
The surreal premise gives the comedy a way into questions of Midwestern masculinity, friendship, queerness and being an outsider. Paul Kruse, a native of La Crosse, Wisconsin, presents the play.
