Ruth Erickson on Leilah Babirye’s wedding-inspired sculptures at the ICA
A queer wedding provides the framework for Leilah Babirye’s new sculptures at the ICA Museum. On December 13, Ruth Erickson leads a gallery conversation about the installation and the materials Babirye brings into it.
A wedding as an organizing idea
In Leilah Babirye: Embaga ya Naki ne Naki (Wedding of Naki and Naki), each new sculpture takes on a role in a wedding ceremony. Headdresses and jewelry are part of that presentation, giving visitors a way to consider the figures in relation to one another as well as individually.
Erickson, the ICA’s Barbara Lee Chief Curator and Director of Public Affairs, will discuss the installation and Babirye’s use of debris, wood and ceramics. The talk offers a chance to think about both the ceremony imagined by the exhibition and the physical materials used to give it form.
