At Head for the Hills Poetry Reading, the invited poets are only the beginning. The Northwest Library series follows its featured readings with an open mic, bringing voices from Portland’s poetry community and the surrounding neighborhood into the program.
From featured readers to the open mic
Co-hosts Sherri Levine and Dale Champlin present two or three featured poets each month. For the October 28, 2026 gathering, the library has not named the featured readers or given separate times for the readings and open mic.
The format offers a choice between coming to listen and taking part in the open mic. If you hope to read, contact the library beforehand: the event details do not explain how readers sign up or how much time they receive.

Beyond the readings
The gathering also makes space to meet the poets: they mingle with audience members and sell their books, and light refreshments are served. Head for the Hills is held on the fourth Wednesday of each month throughout the year, so the October reading is one installment in an ongoing series.
