At SOMArts, Drag and Remembrance Meet in In Their Name’s Closing Night
SOMArts describes the closing-night drag show as exploring drag as an altar. That framing connects the performance to In Their Name: Día de Los Muertos 2026, an exhibition where personal memorial altars sit alongside a broader account of care, kinship and remembrance.
A remembrance exhibition with a wider frame
Now in its 27th year, SOMArts’ annual Día de Los Muertos exhibition was founded by San Francisco artist and curator René Yañez. Co-curators Bridgett Rex and Rio Yañez carry that legacy into this edition, honoring the tradition’s Mexican roots while welcoming people from other cultures to remember the dead together.
For 2026, In Their Name centers mothering as care and collective action. Its frame includes birth and chosen families, communities and movements, as well as house and drag mothers. Personal altars to loved ones who have died bring that expansive idea back to the work of remembrance.
That personal and collective scale fits SOMArts’ longer approach to the exhibition: past editions have used installations to connect individual loss with local and global concerns. This year’s focus on care likewise treats remembrance as more than looking back; the exhibition considers how care can challenge harm and shape what people carry forward.

A collaborative dedication to Tosha Stimage
The exhibition is dedicated to Tosha Stimage, an Oakland-based multidisciplinary artist whose work included installation, textiles, painting, collage and floral design. A profile of Stimage describes care, lineage and survival as recurring concerns in her practice—an apt point of connection for an exhibition about care across generations.
Angela Hennessy, Elizabeth Blancas and Matt Craven created the dedication altar with Stimage’s friends and family. Its collaborative authorship places remembrance itself among the acts of care considered by the exhibition.

A performance, not an altar-making activity
SOMArts bills the closing show as exploring drag as an altar, and describes the performances as embodying love and queer resilience. The idea connects with the exhibition’s recognition of house and drag mothers as forms of care; it is a curatorial frame for the performance, not an announced hands-on altar-making activity.
The artist market featuring local artisans, makers and small businesses was announced for the Oct. 23 opening reception, not the Nov. 20 closing. The closing-night program is the final opportunity to see this edition of the exhibition.
