At KU Open Figure Drawing, the subject is a live model and the activity is putting observations of the human form onto the page. The Department of Visual Art’s November 7 workshop in Lawrence is open to anyone who wants to take part.
Drawing from a live model gives participants a chance to study the body’s shapes and positions directly. KU describes figure drawing as a practice that can range from simple gesture drawings to more detailed work; pencil and charcoal are among the tools used for it.
That observation has uses beyond a single kind of artwork. The department connects figure drawing with portraiture, cartooning, graphic and medical illustration, and sculpture—all fields in which artists work with depictions of the human form. The session is an opportunity to practice drawing, rather than an exhibition of finished work.

The November workshop is part of a monthly series offered while KU classes are in session. The fall 2026 listing also includes a December 5 session, giving anyone interested in returning another date to consider.
Both are listed in Room 405 of E. Laurence Chalmers Hall, a campus building that also houses art studios and classrooms.
