A film screening is only one way to encounter dance at LIMINAL Dance Film Festival. Returning to Dance Place for its second edition April 16–18, 2027, the festival also plans projection, installations, live performance and conversation, bringing movement on camera into a wider exchange between artists and audiences.
LIMINAL takes its name from the idea of a threshold between states. In its programming, that means making room for work across dance, film and other media, rather than treating a recording of a stage performance as the only way dance can appear on screen.
The festival describes projection mapping as a way to bring moving images into dialogue with architecture, while its LIMINAL+ category accommodates dance-based installations and interdisciplinary media. Dance Place’s 2027 announcement includes both projection and installations in the three-day festival, although it does not yet name the individual works.

The festival aims to bring artists from the Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia region into conversation with artists from around the world. Its first edition in 2026 presented 70 films from 18 countries; that is a measure of the inaugural program, not a count or promise for 2027.
The earlier edition also shows how different formats can fit together. Its projection mapping on Dance Place included a live performance by LOCATOR, while OTHER CANTICLES paired a work with a conversation about collaboration and its making. Those were 2026 events, not announced returns; the 2027 film selections and individual sessions remain to be named.

Orange Grove Dance, a resident company at Dance Place, directs and produces the festival under the artistic leadership of Colette Krogol and Matt Reeves. Their own practice spans dance, design and film, a combination reflected in LIMINAL’s interest in both movement made for the camera and work that reaches beyond a conventional screening.

Dance Place is at 3225 8th Street NE in Brookland, two blocks from the Brookland/CUA Metro station on the Red Line. From the station, the venue directs visitors through Monroe Street Market’s Arts Walk, across Monroe Street NE and down 8th Street NE.
Dance Place also identifies itself as a stop on the Metropolitan Branch Trail, with bike racks and a repair station outside.
