Little Forest at SFMOMA: Food, Seasons and Yim Soon-Rye in Conversation
In Little Forest, the rhythms of planting, harvesting and cooking shape the story as much as its characters do. SFMOMA’s screening pairs the film with a conversation featuring director Yim Soon-Rye, connecting its season-led storytelling with the perspective of the filmmaker who made it.
A story organized around the seasons
Little Forest follows a young professional who leaves Seoul for the slower pace of a rural village. She visits with two friends and a dog, recalls her single mother, and spends much of her time planting, harvesting and preparing food.
Adapted from a Japanese manga, the 2018 film gives those everyday tasks an unusually large role. Its focus is less on a tightly plotted conflict than on the seasonal cycle of making meals; SFMOMA notes that the film’s message about slowing down resonated with younger audiences.

A director with a wide-ranging filmography
Yim Soon-Rye began making films with the 1994 short Promenade in the Rain. Her second feature, Waikiki Brothers (2001), centers on a nightclub cover band and its uncertain ambitions in the Korean hinterlands. SFMOMA’s biography places her among South Korea’s leading women filmmakers.
The later titles in that biography show the range of her work: the sports drama Forever the Moment (2008), about Korea’s women’s Olympic handball team; the political thriller The Whistleblower (2014); and the action film The Point Men (2023). The event announcement says Yim will be there in person for the conversation, though it does not specify its format or topics.

A screening presented through cultural exchange
The program is presented with the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles. The Center describes its work as introducing Korean culture to broader American audiences through exchange and programming that spans heritage, contemporary art, film, music, literature and everyday cultural expression. That context connects this screening to a wider cultural remit without asking one film to stand for Korean cinema as a whole.

A related exhibition, with separate admission terms
SFMOMA also lists RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me as a related exhibition. On Floor 7 from October 3, 2026, through February 7, 2027, it brings nearly 150 works from RM’s collection together with works from the museum. The presentation centers Korean modern and contemporary art, including work by Yun Hyong-keun, Park Rehyun and Chang Ucchin, across media such as ceramics, calligraphy, painting and sculpture.
The exhibition has a $10 surcharge on weekdays and a $12 surcharge on weekends and holidays; it is free for SFMOMA members and Encore Pass holders. Those are the exhibition’s terms, and the screening listing does not say that a film ticket includes exhibition access.

Screening followed by conversation
The announced sequence pairs the feature with an in-person conversation with Yim Soon-Rye, bringing the filmmaker’s perspective after the film rather than as a separate opening talk.
