Trio Globo reunites for two Studio5 shows in Evanston
A harmonica, a cello and percussion make an unusual combination at the center of Trio Globo’s music. The three musicians reunite at Studio5 Performing Arts Center on Friday, October 30, 2026, for an early and a late show.
An acoustic trio with wide-ranging roots
Howard Levy plays piano and harmonica, Eugene Friesen plays cello, and Glen Velez is the percussionist. The trio’s account of its acoustic jazz points to rhythms encountered on travels across six continents as well as traditions ranging from sacred and classical music to jazz.
Levy developed techniques that allow him to play a diatonic harmonica chromatically, extending the notes available on an instrument often associated with folk and blues. Friesen’s work includes teaching improvisation to classically trained musicians, while Velez has studied frame-drum techniques from around the world. Their individual practices give context to the instrumentation, though they are not a guide to a particular set list.

A reunion on tape
Studio5 says Trio Globo’s joint appearances are relatively rare and that the musicians are reuniting specifically for this engagement. The concert is also billed as a live taping for Chicago Jazz Live, the syndicated program heard locally on WDCB.
Studio5 presents music as well as dance, theater and film. For listeners unable to attend in person, the organizer offers a separately ticketed stream that can be watched live or for seven days afterward.
