A hands-on basketry workshop in Columbia uses pine needles, hand-stitching and coiling to make an ornament.

Pine needles are the starting material for the Longleaf Pine Ornament Workshop at Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. Catawba artist Teresa Dunlap leads the three-hour class on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Conservation Learning Center.
Dunlap’s workshop brings basketry techniques to a smaller project: each participant will work with pine needles and use hand-stitching and coiling to create an ornament. The focus is on learning to handle a natural material as well as making the finished piece.
Riverbanks supplies the materials for each participant. The session is part of its adult garden workshop program, which also includes a separate Sweetgrass Basket Weaving class with Mary Graham-Grant in January. That later class centers on a different material and the Gullah basket-weaving tradition of the Lowcountry.

Pre-registration is required. Riverbanks sends a confirmation when a registrant is placed in an activity.
The workshop costs $50 for Riverbanks members or $60 for the general public. Ask Adult Programs at 803-602-0803 whether separate zoo admission is needed and about age or skill suitability.
Requests must reach Riverbanks in writing at [email protected] at least 10 days before the event. A $2 processing fee applies to cancellations and date changes; no-shows are not refunded.
The Conservation Learning Center is at 500 Wildlife Parkway, Columbia, SC 29210. Riverbanks’ main entrance at that address is just off I-126 at Greystone Boulevard; the Botanical Garden has a separate entrance in West Columbia.
