Vida Radick has spent more than two decades teaching ceramics. At South Shore Cultural Center, Luminaria de la Vida turns attention to her own recent work, bringing together ceramic forms that the Chicago Park District describes as both useful and totemic.
A series of luminaries forms the core of Radick’s first solo exhibition. The Park District points to the relationship between light and shadow in these works, as well as the organic shapes that recur in her practice. They offer a way to think about ceramics as both objects with a purpose and forms with a sculptural presence.
Radick is a longtime ceramics facilitator at Ridge Park Cultural Center in Beverly. She has taught ceramics for more than 20 years and worked for the Chicago Park District for more than 25. This exhibition is a chance to encounter her work as an artist rather than as an instructor.

The South Shore setting has a history of its own. The cultural center began as the South Shore Country Club, a private institution that excluded Black members. After the club went out of business in the 1970s, community members rallied to save the deteriorating clubhouse, which the Park District rehabilitated as a cultural center later that decade.
The building was rebuilt in 1916 and became a Chicago Landmark in 2004. Today the surrounding park also includes a nature sanctuary and garden, giving visitors options for a walk beyond the exhibition.
