Maranatha Baptist University stages an adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s play over four performances, November 12–14, 2026.

Eliza Doolittle sells flowers; Henry Higgins studies the sounds of speech. When the professor takes her on as a pupil, their encounter puts the social value attached to an accent under scrutiny. MBU’s Pygmalion brings that premise to Watertown in a production that pairs humor with questions of identity.
Higgins believes that teaching Eliza to speak differently can alter how society receives her. The premise makes language more than a technical skill: it becomes a marker of class, with consequences for how Eliza is treated.
As Eliza enters unfamiliar social surroundings, the adaptation considers the gap between outward manners and a person’s sense of self. MBU describes its version of Shaw’s play as both humorous and thoughtful.
