Before tragedy interrupts their senior-year plans, Mouse establishes an uneven friendship: Callie is a celebrated young singer and performer in her North Little Rock community, while Minnie has grown accustomed to relying on Callie’s protection.
The film begins in 2002, with Minnie and Callie preparing for their final year of high school. When an accident changes their friendship, Minnie loses both a close companion and the familiar place she occupied beside Callie.
Minnie’s search for connection brings her closer to Callie’s mother, who is also coping with grief. Their relationship puts two different kinds of loss and need for companionship alongside one another; it moves the story beyond the disruption of a teenage friendship.
