Nemours Mansion brings together two ideas Alfred du Pont wanted for his Wilmington home: the late-18th-century French style his wife Alicia admired and the contemporary technology he favored, including inventions of his own. The Nov. 7 guided tour focuses on the Mansion, while admission also covers the rest of the Estate.
After marrying Alicia in 1907, Alfred du Pont commissioned New York architects Carrère and Hastings to design a mansion on his 3,000-acre Wilmington property. He named the estate Nemours for the French town represented by his great-great-grandfather in the French Estates General.

The ticket includes admission to the rest of the Estate, whose grounds description traces the Long Walk from the Mansion to the Reflecting Pool. Japanese cryptomeria, pink-flowering horse chestnuts and pin oaks line the walk. The pool covers an acre and has 157 jets at its center.
Sculpture gives the approach another layer of history. The Four Seasons figures around the pool, inspired by classical mythology and made in an Art Nouveau style, are by French-born American sculptor Henri Crenier (1873–1948). Two elk at the top of the Vista are the work of French animal sculptor Prosper Lecourtier (1855–1924). The tour announcement does not say that the guided Mansion visit includes these outdoor locations.
