A free, self-guided visit in DUMBO connects East River animals with the changing landscape of the waterfront park.

A 250-gallon estuarium and a scale model of Brooklyn Bridge Park offer two different ways to examine the waterfront during Open Hours at the Environmental Education Center. Visitors can explore at their own pace, with educators available to help.
The estuarium holds a changing collection of East River fish and invertebrates caught through the park’s seining and fishing programs. An attached interactive tidal pool gives visitors a view from above of some smaller species. The collection fluctuates, so no particular animal is guaranteed to be on display.
The connection to the river predates the indoor center. In 2008, before Brooklyn Bridge Park officially opened, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy began a public seining program beneath the Manhattan Bridge to introduce people to local marine life. The center opened in 2015, giving education programs an indoor home for year-round activities.

The Discovery Station shifts attention from individual animals to the park as a whole. Its three-dimensional scale map sits above 13 hands-on drawers about features of the park’s ecology, sustainability and built environment. Picture pullouts compare older and newer views of places in and around the park.
The exhibit’s base has its own connection to that transformation: it incorporates longleaf yellow pine salvaged from warehouses demolished during the park’s creation. The model and historical images offer a way to consider the waterfront as both a constructed place and a habitat.

Open Hours are self-led rather than a scheduled tour. Alongside the animal displays and model are a reading corner, games and crafts, with educators available for guidance. Activities and exhibits rotate with monthly themes; past examples given by the center include pollination, geology and sustainability.
The displays and activities are intended for all ages. Someone interested in wildlife might start at the estuarium, while a visitor curious about the park’s design and history can spend more time with the Discovery Station.
