A collection of East River fish and invertebrates gives visitors one way into Brooklyn Bridge Park’s ecology; a scale model offers another. Both are part of Open Hours at the Environmental Education Center, a drop-in program with educators on hand to answer questions.
The center’s 250-gallon estuarium houses a changing collection of fish and invertebrates caught through the park’s seining and fishing programs. An attached interactive tidal pool lets visitors look down at some of the smaller species; the center also keeps a small collection of native aquatic and land animals.
The collection connects the indoor space to an older waterfront education effort. In 2008, before Brooklyn Bridge Park opened, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy began public seining beneath the Manhattan Bridge. The education center opened in 2015, creating an indoor home for year-round learning.

The Discovery Station turns attention from river life to the park itself. Its three-dimensional scale map is accompanied by 13 hands-on drawers about ecology, sustainability and the built environment, plus picture pullouts comparing places in the past and present.
Even the exhibit’s base carries a piece of local history: it incorporates longleaf yellow pine salvaged from warehouses demolished during the park’s creation. Visitors can explore independently, with educators available for guidance.

Open Hours also include crafts and a reading corner. Games, exhibits and activities change with monthly educational themes; subjects have included pollination, geology and sustainability. The November listing does not specify that month’s theme.
