At Raíces y Alas, Austin Public Library brings a Día de los Muertos celebration to Southeast Branch with a performance by Los Fandangueros de Austin, activities and food. The October 30 gathering also recognizes the monarch butterfly, which the library identifies as an important symbol of the holiday.
A place for remembrance in Roots & Wings
Día de los Muertos is a time to remember loved ones who have died. At Southeast Branch, the library pairs that tradition with attention to the monarch butterfly, bringing the holiday into a citywide festival devoted to nature.
Austin’s annual Roots & Wings Festival marks both Arbor Day and Monarch Appreciation Day. Its citywide program explores local nature, including pollinators and the urban tree canopy. Raíces y Alas contributes a cultural celebration to that broader program.

A performance and activities for all ages
Los Fandangueros de Austin are the featured performers at Raíces y Alas. The library also lists activities and food, although it does not specify the activities, menu or a separate performance time. Families planning around a particular part of the gathering can call Southeast Branch for more details.
For families interested in a separate holiday outing, the library also lists two Día de los Muertos storytimes at Little Walnut Creek Branch on Wednesday, October 28, including a Spanish-English session. Those are different events at a different branch, not part of the Friday gathering.
