A daylong biodynamic workshop in Chestnut Ridge pairs garden work with seed-saving basics and a classroom discussion.

All times are local to the venue · America/New York
Compost at different stages of maturity is more than a talking point at Soil, Seed & Self-Sufficiency: participants will handle it, build piles and make a potting-soil mix. Threefold Community Farm’s workshop connects those practical tasks with a broader biodynamic approach to producing resources for a farm’s future.
The garden work gives participants a chance to handle compost made from different materials and at different stages of maturity. Alongside building piles and mixing potting soil, the group will treat compost piles with biodynamic preparations.
Cover crops are also part of the workshop’s soil-building theme, though a separate hands-on cover-crop activity is not specified. Seed saving brings another aspect of the farm’s self-sufficiency goal into the day: Megan Durney will teach the basics through hands-on instruction.

Durney is Threefold’s farm manager and directs its seed-saving work. She studied seed saving with Harald Hoven at Raphael Garden in Fair Oaks, California, in 2014–2015, bringing that experience to a subject she also practices on the farm.
The day also includes a classroom discussion led by Mac Mead on the relationship between soil science and spiritual science. Mead is Threefold’s program director and farm mentor; he began farming in 1975 and learned biodynamic methods from former colleagues of Ehrenfried Pfeiffer.
