Alton Little Theater’s political comedy follows Ned Newley from reluctant candidate to a campaign gaining ground on his honesty. Seven performances are listed Nov. 13–22, 2026, though only two curtain times are confirmed.

In The Outsider, Ned Newley’s discomfort with public speaking and conflict makes him an improbable contender for governor. The play’s comic wager is that voters may see his unvarnished manner as an asset rather than a liability.
Newley would rather avoid the spotlight than seek it. When he unexpectedly becomes a candidate for governor, his difficulty speaking before a crowd and reluctance to confront others make him look ill-suited to the job.
The campaign’s turn comes when polling suggests that voters could prefer his candor to the polished presentation associated with other politicians. The theater’s synopsis says his bid gains momentum, setting up the comedy’s central mismatch: the qualities that make Newley an unlikely candidate may also distinguish him.

Alton Little Theater began in 1933, inspired by Dorothy Colonius, an English teacher at Shurtleff College who wanted a community theater for her hometown. The theater had a permanent location by 1960 and retains its original architecture. Its visitor profile describes it as Illinois’ oldest continuously operating live theater and reports more than 500 productions.
