Weekly Thursday Story Time at Seashore Trolley Museum brings Maine stories to a model railroad
The trains are only part of the picture at Weekly Thursday Story Time at the Seashore Trolley Museum Model Railroad. After a volunteer reads favorite stories about trains and Maine, children and adults can look over a layout built around the railroad’s communities as well as its tracks.
A landscape beyond the tracks
The Maine Central Model Railroad depicts the Maine Central Railroad and places along its route. The museum says its buildings and infrastructure are modeled primarily on Maine from 1940 to 1960, even though the railroad’s heyday came before World War I.
The museum describes scenes ranging from Quoddy Lighthouse to paper mills and Dragon Cement. That gives families looking at the model after the reading more to follow than the trains alone: the layout also suggests the industries and communities connected by the railroad.

A home-built collection with a public life
Helen and Harold “Buz” Beal welcomed visitors to see their model railroad at their Jonesport home for decades. Seashore Trolley Museum accepted the couple’s donation in 2020, and the layout and its new building opened to the public in May 2024.
One detail in the Beals’ layout has a literary connection of its own: Stephen King provided designs of his Bangor Victorian home, which the couple reproduced in miniature. The museum calls the exhibit Maine’s largest HO-scale model railroad.
