Graciela Iturbide’s photograph on the cover of Carribean Fragoza’s debut story collection makes the book a particularly apt choice for SFMOMA’s Works on Paper Book Club. On October 29, 2026, photography curator Delphine Sims will introduce Eat the Mouth That Feeds You and its links to the museum’s Iturbide exhibition before guiding a discussion.
A collection grounded in the uncanny
Published by City Lights in 2021, Eat the Mouth That Feeds You brings surreal elements into stories of domestic life. SFMOMA describes a collection shaped by Latinx and Chicanx perspectives, reaching across the U.S.–Mexico border and into imagined worlds.
Fragoza is a fiction writer and journalist who grew up in South El Monte, California. She is also the founder and co-director of South El Monte Arts Posse, an interdisciplinary arts collective. Her collection was a finalist for a 2022 PEN Award.

The photographer on the cover
Sims has a connection to both parts of the pairing: she selected Fragoza’s book for the club and curated the San Francisco presentation of Graciela Iturbide: Between Two Worlds with curatorial assistant Alex Landry. Her opening talk will address the book’s relationship to the exhibition, including Iturbide’s cover photograph.
The retrospective covers more than five decades of Iturbide’s work. Her photographs, made primarily in black and white, encompass subjects in Mexico such as cultural traditions and botanical gardens, as well as work from India, the United States and other countries. The exhibition is on Floor 3 through November 29, 2026.
Visitors who want to see the exhibition as well as attend the discussion should plan for gallery admission separately: the exhibition is included with museum general admission, while the book club is free with an RSVP. The museum does not say the book club registration includes exhibition entry.
