WWRR Autumn Leaf Ramble: The Mt. Cuba Stop and Route Questions
At Mt. Cuba Picnic Grove, the train outing includes a half-hour break beside Red Clay Creek: riders can get off for a picnic or stay aboard as the train continues farther up the line. The central planning question is whether that itinerary is operating for the date you want. The separate Hockessin route appears on the railroad’s Autumn Leaf Special page, not as a confirmed option for any specific Autumn Leaf Ramble departure.
A picnic break, with the choice to stay aboard
The IN Wilmington listing describes the Mt. Cuba trip as a 1½-hour round trip, including a half-hour layover at a grove beside Red Clay Creek. You can bring a picnic for the stop. If you prefer not to get off, the listing says you may remain on the train as it continues farther up the line for more autumn-color viewing.
That choice affects practical planning: the grove has no restrooms, while the station and train do. The railroad also allows food and drink aboard, and its Greenbank Station Gift Shop sells snacks and drinks.

Hockessin is a separate itinerary, not a listed departure detail
The railroad’s Autumn Leaf Special page describes a longer Hockessin trip: a 2½-hour round trip covering the full 17-mile route, with a half-hour stop in town. Riders can use the break to browse local shops or get food near the tracks.
That page does not establish that any Autumn Leaf Ramble departure goes to Hockessin. It also said no Autumn Leaf Special excursions were currently scheduled when checked Nov. 1, 2026, while the IN Wilmington listing shows dates through Nov. 8. Confirm directly with the railroad whether your selected date is operating and which itinerary it will use.

The route’s local history is part of the outing
The railroad’s general ride information describes a route along Red Clay Creek through wooded countryside, past Wooddale Covered Bridge and through rock cuts—sections where the train runs between exposed rock walls. The tracks also pass behind homes along the line. On most excursions, narrators discuss former mills, quarries and small towns in the valley; the railroad does not confirm narration for every departure.
Historic Red Clay Valley Inc., the railroad’s nonprofit owner and operator, says its mission is to preserve and interpret northern Delaware’s natural, cultural and railroad heritage. That mission connects the ride to the industrial and community history of the valley, not just its fall scenery.

Details to check before you go
Sixteen departures are listed for 2026
The listing shows Oct. 28 at 12:30 p.m.; and Oct. 31, Nov. 1, Nov. 4, Nov. 7 and Nov. 8 at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. It gives no finish time for individual departures.
As of the Nov. 1 check, Oct. 28 and Oct. 31 had passed. Confirm that a remaining date and time are still operating and bookable before traveling.
Treat the listed prices as unconfirmed
IN Wilmington gives a ticket-cost range of $0–$20. The railroad’s separate Autumn Leaf page lists coach fares of $22 for adults, $21 for seniors age 60 and older, $20 for children ages 2–12 and free for children under 2; it also says HRCV members save $2 per ticket. Because that page reported no Autumn Leaf Special trips scheduled when checked Nov. 1, its fare table does not confirm prices for the listed Ramble departures. Check current availability, fares and terms before booking.
The railroad strongly encourages reservations for nearly all excursions. Its Autumn Leaf page also describes assigned seating. If that applies to your booking and you want to sit with another group, make the request at least five days before departure—through the “Seat With” field when booking or by contacting the railroad.
For prepaid tickets, give your last name at the Greenbank Station ticket counter to collect the physical tickets; those tickets are required to board. To change or cancel an online order, call the business office at least 48 hours before the ride. The policy is strictly enforced, and the office is closed on weekends and holidays; its listed weekday hours are 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at 302-998-1930.

Allow time to collect tickets and board
The railroad recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before departure. Boarding begins 15 minutes before the train leaves, and Greenbank Station opens one hour before the first departure on operating days. Trains leave on schedule.
Getting to Greenbank Station
Boarding address and parking
Board at Wilmington & Western Railroad’s Greenbank Station, 2201 Newport Gap Pike (Route 41 North), Wilmington, DE 19808. The station is about 1,000 feet north of Delaware Route 2 (Kirkwood Highway), and the railroad lists free parking there.
For drivers coming from the Delaware Memorial Bridge, the railroad’s directions lead via I-295, I-95 South, Route 141 North and Route 2 West, then to Route 41 North at the third traffic light. The station is at the bottom of the hill on the right.
The official directions do not provide public-transit details. Map links can calculate directions from your own starting point.
