New York opens up on Brooklyn Bridge
Choose a side of the river, look closely at the cables and follow the crossing down to Brooklyn’s waterfront.

Inside this guide
On Brooklyn Bridge, the city comes with a frame. A stone arch holds a piece of sky; cables divide the skyline into narrow triangles; the East River appears through steelwork beside the walking deck. The familiar view changes with a few steps. Crossing on foot gives you time to notice the bridge doing something more interesting than posing for its photograph.
It is still a working connection between Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, with road traffic, a protected bicycle route and a separate pedestrian promenade. A good visit begins by choosing where you want to finish. Walk towards Manhattan for the skyline ahead, or towards Brooklyn for an afternoon that continues down to the waterfront. Either way, leave room for the approaches: the river is only part of the journey.
