Central Park, made by hand
An elm-lined promenade, a tiled ceiling, a carefully made woodland and a neighborhood beneath the landscape. Walk Central Park with more to see—and more to understand.

A straight avenue of elms leads to a ceiling made from thousands of ceramic tiles. Beyond the terrace, a bridge bends across the Lake and paths loosen into woodland. The scenery changes quickly enough to feel like several places. That is part of the design: Central Park gives a walking body different ways to belong to the city.
For a rewarding first visit, follow those changes. Start with the Mall, spend time at Bethesda Terrace, cross toward the Ramble and leave room for the history of Seneca Village farther north. This walk gathers architecture, horticulture and the lives behind the landscape into one outing. It also asks a useful question of a place so often called an escape: what work, and whose ground, made this particular freedom possible?
