Alcatraz has more than one story to tell
Read the island through its cellhouse, Indigenous history and living gardens. Alcatraz is temporarily closed for dock repairs; reopening is anticipated November 19, 2026, subject to change.

Inside this guide
From the bay, Alcatraz is a small piece of land carrying an extraordinary weight of buildings. The cellhouse rises above a shore crowded with walls, paths and remnants of other uses. Move closer in the photographs and the picture changes again. Flowers spill down terraces. A painted claim survives on a wall. The prison is one way into the island, but it cannot explain everything there.
A rewarding future visit would leave time for those changes of perspective. Listen inside the cellhouse, then make room for the island's Indigenous history and for the gardens outside. The distance between these stories is small enough to walk; the differences between them deserve more attention than a quick circuit of famous escape locations.
