Gunner Johnson runs a bar in Bunyan Bay, Minnesota, and has a fight with his wife, Clara, before deciding to skip Christmas. A snowmobile ride ends with Gunner falling through the ice and entering a coma; while he is unconscious, local folk figure Sven Yorgensen appears in the roles of Christmas past, present and future.
The dream gives the story its route through Dickens without making this a conventional staging of A Christmas Carol. Gunner must face the consequences of his choice and, at the heart of the plot, the possibility of making amends with Clara at the Bunyan. Phil Olson is credited with the book and lyrics.
