After the Fire: Lynn Fang on soil renewal and community resilience
Soil recovery is both an ecological question and a community undertaking in After the Fire, a talk by soil and landscape ecologist Lynn Fang. Drawing on Altadena case studies, Fang will discuss ways to support soil affected by wildfire and contamination.
Recovery below the surface
Fang works with SoilWise and DENA Soil Project. Her lecture brings together soil contaminant bioremediation and post-fire recovery, including community-led restoration efforts in Altadena.
The discussion considers the potential roles of plants, microbes and fungi alongside minerals and organic matter. That range gives listeners a way to think about soil as more than dirt to be replaced: recovery can involve living organisms as well as the materials around them.

Working with seeds and soil
A separate afternoon Craft Lab, Earth Offerings ~ Shaping Seeds + Soil for Post-Fire Recovery, turns to making. Participants shape earth forms inspired by native plants, seeds, roots and microbes, using materials that include clay, compost, biochar, zeolite, mycorrhizal fungi and phytoremediation seeds.
The forms can go home with their makers and be planted. The activity offers a tangible connection to the lecture’s subject, though making one is not a guarantee of a particular cleanup result.
