Earth Offerings at Craft Contemporary: making forms for soil renewal
At Earth Offerings, the finished object is not necessarily destined for a shelf. Participants at Craft Contemporary will shape earth forms that they can take home and plant, bringing a hands-on craft activity into a conversation about soil recovery after fire.
Making with soil renewal in mind
The workshop draws its shapes from native plants, seeds, roots and microbes. Its materials include clay and compost alongside biochar, zeolite, beneficial mycorrhizal fungi and seeds for phytoremediation—the use of plants in addressing contamination.
The forms are intended to support soil bioremediation when planted. That purpose links the making process to living systems, although the workshop does not promise a specific result for a form planted at home.

The landscape beyond the worktable
For a broader introduction, the preceding After the Fire lecture considers how plants, microbes, fungi, minerals and organic matter can contribute to the recovery of fire-affected and contaminated soils. It includes Altadena case studies and community-led restoration efforts.
The speaker, Lynn Fang, is a soil and landscape ecologist with SoilWise and DENA Soil Project. Her noon talk is a separate event from the afternoon Craft Lab: it is free with an RSVP, while the workshop has its own registration.
