Fleet Science Center Ball Pool: A Daily Play Break in Balboa Park
The Ball Pool pairs a large play space with an open invitation: visitors can make up a setting of their own or simply take a break during a Fleet Science Center visit. The listing connects play with balance and coordination, but describes no lesson or fixed task.
Use the pool as a prompt, not a script
The Fleet’s examples invite visitors to imagine a far-off world or an unexplained aquatic setting. They are ideas for play, not separate programmed scenarios; the center also presents the pool as a place to laugh or relax without completing a particular story or outcome.
That makes the Ball Pool an informal part of a broader museum visit rather than a scheduled class or show. Anyone looking for guided instruction should not assume it is offered here; the published description leaves the play open-ended.

Plan your visit
Daily, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.
The Ball Pool listing gives these daily hours and says they may change. The Fleet’s general visitor hours are 10 a.m.–5 p.m. The center lists Thanksgiving and Christmas Day as closures.
For December Nights, the Fleet lists a closure from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 4 and 5. Check whether that schedule affects Ball Pool hours before planning a visit on either date.

Museum admission is paid; Ball Pool coverage is unspecified
The Fleet Experience is $29.95 for adults ages 13 and older, $27.95 for seniors 65 and older, and $24.95 for children ages 3–12. Children 2 and under enter free; group discounts are available for groups of 15 or more.

The Ball Pool listing does not say whether pool access is included, separately charged, reservation-based or subject to a stated capacity limit.

Venue services are listed, but Ball Pool arrangements are not
The Fleet lists accessible parking in the lot off Space Theater Way and several wheelchair-accessible restrooms. A limited number of complimentary wheelchairs are available; ask at the ticket counter about availability. For information or assistance with elevator access to the second floor, contact staff at the ticket counter.
Visitors with disabilities who need assistance may be eligible for free admission for an aid or companion; ask at the ticket counter. The Fleet also lists Accessibility Morning on the third Saturday of each month, from 9 to 10 a.m. Visitors can experience the galleries in a quieter setting and attend a special documentary screening with the house lights on and lower soundtrack volume. The source does not specify whether the Ball Pool is available during this session.
Trained service animals are welcome on a non-retractable leash, harness or tether and must remain under their handler’s control. Pets and emotional support animals are not permitted inside the museum.
Getting to the Fleet
Address and parking entrance
The Fleet Science Center is at 1875 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101, at the east end of the El Prado pathway beside Bea Evenson Fountain. The Fleet lot is on the south side of the building, steps from the entrance, and accessed from Space Theater Way off Park Boulevard.
Balboa Park parking is city-managed. Fleet’s directions page says Cultural District parking charges were scheduled to begin Jan. 5, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; its wording is prospective, so confirm whether charges are currently in effect and check current costs with the City. The page lists payment at park kiosks or through the ParkSmarter app and says the City does not offer free parking for members of Balboa Park’s cultural institutions. Additional lots are located throughout the park.
Public transportation
MTS Bus 7 and Rapid 215 serve stops along Park Boulevard within a short walk of the Fleet. Routes 3 and 120 serve 4th and 5th Avenues on the park’s west side; the Fleet’s directions describe walking east from Laurel Street over Cabrillo Bridge, past Plaza de Panama and toward the fountain.
Rapid 215 connects downtown with Amtrak and COASTER trains at Santa Fe Depot and the Cruise Ship Terminal. Check MTS for current routes and schedules. The linked map can provide directions from your starting point.
