MOCA’s In These Times brings five years of collecting into view through galleries organized around subjects rather than a strict chronology. On October 30, 2026, senior curator Bennett Simpson will lead members at the Contributing level and above through the exhibition he organized with curatorial assistant Ariana Rizo.
A collection arranged by ideas
In These Times: Recent Acquisitions at MOCA draws on purchases and gifts added to the collection over the preceding five years. Its thematic galleries look at representations of Los Angeles, group portraiture, developments in abstract painting and works marked by close attention to detail.
The exhibition’s featured works span different materials and approaches. Magdalena Suarez Frimkess’s Chariot is glazed stoneware; Julie Mehretu and Nairy Baghramian’s TRANSpaintings (green ecstatic) uses ink and acrylic on polyester mesh. The exhibition also includes artists Alex Israel, Henry Taylor and Sawako Goda. Simpson’s walkthrough offers a chance to visit the show with one of its organizers, though MOCA has not published a route or a list of works he will discuss.
MOCA’s digital guide includes more information about the exhibition and featured artworks, making it useful for a closer look before or after a gallery visit.

The exhibition beyond the member event
In These Times is on view at MOCA Grand Avenue from September 20, 2026, through January 3, 2027. General museum admission is free, and MOCA recommends advance reservations; that is separate from the October 30 walkthrough’s membership requirement.
For visitors who do not qualify for the member event, Simpson also leads a separate walkthrough on November 5 at 6 p.m. That event is free with an RSVP and takes place during DTLA ArtNight, when MOCA Grand Avenue remains open until 8 p.m.
