A familiar vampire story becomes a question about power in Hartford Stage’s Dracula: who is feared, and who gets called a monster? The October 29 performance is part of the adaptation’s American premiere run.
Malcolm’s adaptation approaches Stoker’s story through fear, desire and survival, with psychological suspense alongside gothic horror. Hartford Stage describes an ensemble that changes shape as the story unfolds, using language and sound to help build the world of the play.
Sara Gutierrez plays Mina, Lucas Dixon plays Jonathan and Scout Backus plays Lucy; Dixon and Backus are also listed as ensemble performers. Jackson Gay returns to direct at Hartford Stage after The Mousetrap. The creative team includes sound designer Caroline Eng, lighting designer Paul Whitaker and movement and intimacy coordinator Shura Baryshnikov.
