Tree Watching uses the act of observing trees to ask how land can carry memory and spiritual meaning. At The Delaware Contemporary, four artists’ practices are presented in relation to land stewardship, medicinal knowledge, foodways, social and political histories, and the cultures of the people who inhabit a place.
The exhibition treats trees as more than features of a view: they can stand for the histories of people and communities who live alongside them. Its premise is that attentive observation can open onto memories that are personal as well as collective, and that the natural world may hold meanings not recorded in written archives.
That approach brings physical and psychological landscapes into the same frame. Rather than separating land from the lives shaped by it, the show considers stewardship, knowledge and cultural history as part of how people understand a place.

Guest curator Maleke Glee brings together Aziza Gibson-Hunter, Vetiver (Vonne Napper), Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz and Niama Safia Sandy. The museum describes the artists’ practices collectively, linking them to natural and psychological landscapes and to subjects including medicinal knowledge, foodways, land stewardship, social and political histories, and cultural traditions held by local inhabitants.
The exhibition also uses trees’ varied forms and patterns of growth to frame the artists’ distinct cultural and aesthetic inheritances: practices rooted in particular lineages can develop in different directions while remaining connected to place. Its description invokes Indigenous ways of thinking alongside the earth and one another as part of the broader context; it does not assign that identity to any individual artist.
