Lisa Bradley: Beyond Luminosity at the Delaware Art Museum
A useful way into Lisa Bradley: Beyond Luminosity is to compare works separated by decades and materials: oil paintings from 1995 and 2019 sit in a larger selection that also includes ink on paper from 1975, 1978 and around 1990. The Delaware Art Museum’s presentation connects those dates to Bradley’s ongoing exploration of abstraction and spiritual experience.
A comparison across decades
The museum describes Bradley’s practice through the relationship between close, deliberate marks and sweeping gestures. For this exhibition, it emphasizes recent paintings in which deep dark areas meet light-filled expanses, and links those contrasts to a sense of movement held alongside stillness.
The named paintings give visitors specific points of comparison: First Motion (2019), Returning (2019–2020), Omnipresent (2018), Thinnest of Veils (2019) and Abundantly Clear (2019–2020) are shown in the exhibition listing alongside Akasa II (1995). The listed dimensions make scale another point to consider: First Motion measures 76½ by 57½ inches, while Akasa II measures 47 by 38 inches.
The chronology also reaches beyond the canvases. Three untitled ink-on-paper works are dated 1975, 1978 and around 1990. Looking across those earlier works and the more recent paintings offers a grounded way to follow Bradley’s practice across different periods and media, without treating the exhibition as a survey of paintings alone.

A practice informed by spiritual experience
The museum identifies spiritual experience as an important influence on Bradley’s work. Rather than prescribing a single interpretation of the paintings, its description points to the balance of motion and stillness and to the contrast between dark and light. Those ideas provide a useful frame for comparing the dated works in Gallery 9.
Bradley was born in Columbus, Ohio, and earned her undergraduate degree from Boston University in 1973. She has identified gallery owner and artist Betty Parsons and collectors Dorothy and Herbert Vogel as important early mentors. Her work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions in the United States and Europe.
Her paintings are also held by institutions including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. That collection history places the Wilmington exhibition within a career represented at museums across the country.

A companion publication
A companion monograph brings together contributions from curators, critics and art historians Ronny Cohen, Eleanor Heartney, Townsend Ludington, Carter Ratcliff and John Yau. The exhibition listing identifies the book as a companion to the show but does not confirm whether it is available at the museum.
