Into the Blue: Build a Mini Indigo Vat with Bebe LaMonica
The project at the center of Into the Blue is a mini indigo vat that participants will learn to build and activate. Across two class sessions, Bebe LaMonica’s workshop also covers the preparation behind dyeing natural fibers, from scouring and mordanting to preparing a dye bath and exploring shifts in tone.
Color starts before the dye bath
The workshop takes indigo, described by Craft Contemporary as one of the world’s oldest natural dyes, as a practical introduction to natural dyeing. Participants will cover fiber preparation, scouring, mordanting and dye-bath preparation, working with naturally derived materials and natural fibers.
Techniques for creating tonal variation are part of the announced material, too. That makes the class about more than setting up a vat: participants will also explore how preparation and dyeing connect to different results in color.

A compact vat for small-scale work
Participants will learn to build and activate a mini indigo vat using natural reducing agents and basic chemistry. Craft Contemporary presents the small-scale vat as a way to continue experimenting at home and make dye projects of their own.
The event is a two-session workshop on Feb. 27 and 28, but its listing does not assign particular topics to either day. Plan on the complete two-date class rather than treating either session as a separately described workshop. No previous dyeing experience is required.
