Cottonwood root, carved detail and individual artistic approaches are part of the story at the Heard Museum’s Katsina Marketplace. The one-day gathering offers a chance to meet Hopi and Pueblo carvers and watch demonstrations in Steele Auditorium.
The Heard Museum describes katsina dolls as figures representing Katsinam, spiritual beings important to Hopi and other Puebloan cultures. The museum connects them to ceremonies through which moral values, agricultural knowledge and traditions are taught to younger generations.
In its account of Hopi katsina dolls, the museum explains that they are traditionally given to babies and girls during ceremonies with a prayer-wish for growth and well-being. Carvers also make the figures for sale. That context gives a marketplace visit a perspective beyond the objects’ visual detail.

Hopi katsina dolls are traditionally carved from cottonwood root. The Heard’s collection traces changes in style: figures from around the turn of the 20th century often had arms and legs defined against a solid body, while mid-20th-century carvers made figures in poses suggesting movement.
The museum notes that some more recent carvings retain that sense of action while cutting details such as feathers, clothing and plants directly into the wood. A stain may leave the grain visible. At the marketplace, the planned demonstrations offer a chance to watch carvers at work; the museum has not yet named the featured artists.

The juried competition has awards for Best of Show, Best Contemporary Carving and Best Traditional (Old Style) Carving. Together, the latter two categories acknowledge different approaches to the form rather than presenting katsina carving as a single fixed style.
Artists entering the competition must submit work in person to the Heard Museum Shop by 3 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2027. Winners are scheduled to be announced by 4 p.m. that day, ahead of the Saturday marketplace.
