Detroit’s Pride festival returns June 12–13, with a tradition that reaches from a 1972 civil rights march to a downtown gathering of celebration and community connection.

A march against discriminatory laws came first; the picnic that followed in later years grew into a festival. That history helps explain why Motor City Pride pairs celebration with a continuing call for LGBTQ equality.
The organizer traces Motor City Pride to a downtown Detroit march in June 1972 protesting anti-LGBTQ laws and calling for recognition and equal rights. A picnic was added after the march in subsequent years, eventually developing into the festival.
The path to Hart Plaza included several moves. When the statewide civil rights march shifted to Lansing in 1989, Frank Colasonti Jr. founded and chaired a metro Detroit Pride festival, sponsored by the Detroit Area Gay/Lesbian Council. It took place that year at the University of Michigan’s Dearborn campus.
The event became Motor City Pride when it moved to downtown Ferndale in 2003. The organizer’s history dates its move to Hart Plaza to 2012, when the festival expanded to two days and a parade returned to the lineup. Visit Detroit gives 2011 as the year of the move to downtown Detroit.

The organizer describes advocacy, connection and celebration as the three pillars of its work. The festival is also intended as a place to connect with organizations, clubs and people working toward LGBTQ equality.
That community focus has taken different forms over the years. In 2024, vendor director Nikalas Manning created a Health Village to bring LGBTQ-focused health care resources together; the organizer says Manning had marched with fellow health care workers in the 2021 parade. The village is part of the event’s history, not a confirmed 2027 feature.
