Betty Carter’s legacy, interpreted by Sheila Slaughter in Detroit
The Nov. 2 program is billed as an interpretation of Betty Carter’s legacy, not a recreation of her. Sheila Slaughter, a Detroit vocalist, is the featured singer in a tribute that makes Carter’s influence its starting point.
A legacy heard through a local voice
The event account presents Carter as an innovator whose influence reached generations of singers. It points to the way she shaped vocal lines, made room for improvisation and approached rhythm with independence.
Slaughter is described as a respected Detroit vocalist with a deep connection to jazz. The billing emphasizes her own artistry, so the evening’s focus is how a current local singer engages with Carter’s example—not a promise of an exact recreation.

A tribute series linking past and present
Sky Covington’s Preservation of Jazz series describes its purpose as honoring influential figures, celebrating artists working today and keeping jazz history in circulation through live performances. The Carter tribute places those aims side by side: a historical influence and a Detroit vocalist interpreting that influence now.
The series calendar also lists a Gil Scott-Heron tribute featuring Knowledge Born Truth Allah on Nov. 9, a Cassandra Wilson tribute on Nov. 16, and an Ella Fitzgerald tribute featuring Jiana Hunter on Nov. 23. These are separate bookings, not additional acts on the Nov. 2 program.

Other November tributes are separate bookings
The series calendar lists three later November performances: a Gil Scott-Heron tribute with Knowledge Born Truth Allah on Nov. 9, a Cassandra Wilson tribute on Nov. 16, and an Ella Fitzgerald tribute with Jiana Hunter on Nov. 23. They are distinct events, not extensions of the Nov. 2 bill.
