Geologic erosion and community oral histories are not usually discussed in the same session. Red Hot Research - Materiality & Archive puts their researchers on one program, offering a chance to consider preservation and memory across disciplines.
From deep time to community records
The range begins with Noah McLean of Geology, whose listed interests include deep time, geologic history, erosion and preservation. Zay Dale of English is listed with textiles, literature and history, as well as capitalism, American slavery, Blackness and violence. Their interests give the session two different points of entry into questions about materials and the past.
Maggie Unverzagt Goddard’s museum studies interests include material culture, public history and memory. Tadeo Weiner Davis, from Social Welfare, is listed with community archives, oral history, labor movements and organizing. Considered together, those areas bring institutional and community approaches to preserving history into view.
Webster McDonald of Theatre & Dance adds interests listed as Archival Weight/Wait/Waste, Submerging Ontologies and Violent Angularities. These are the researchers’ listed areas of interest, not announced talk titles; the precise subjects of their individual presentations may be narrower.

An invitation to follow a connection
The Commons organizes Red Hot Research as a meeting point for researchers across fields. Each presenter speaks for six minutes, in a format inspired by Pecha Kucha’s short, slide-based introductions. Rather than one extended lecture, expect a sequence of brief introductions to different lines of inquiry.
Emily Casey of Art History is the emcee. The organizers encourage audience members to talk with presenters and one another during breaks, making those pauses a useful opportunity to ask about an idea a short talk leaves open.
