American Voices, Indiana Stories brings a Hoosier perspective to the nation’s 250th
A national anniversary becomes a local story in American Voices, Indiana Stories. The Indianapolis Men’s Chorus performance uses singing and narration to consider Indiana’s place in 250 years of American history.
A concert with history in the frame
Rather than treating the anniversary as a concert theme alone, the program pairs choral music with storytelling and historical context. Its announced subjects range from innovation and resilience to service, creativity and community.
Joseph Perkins Jr. of the chorus curates the program, while Dr. Nicholas Johnson, an associate professor of musicology at Butler University, provides the historical research and interpretation. The result is conceived as a performance in which the stories around the music are part of the experience.

Crossroad joins the evening
The performance features Crossroad, the chorus’s new chamber ensemble. It is one part of the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus’s 2026–27 season, but this program has a distinct setting in the Basile Theater at the Indiana History Center.
Founded in 1990, the chorus uses music to create visibility for the LGBTQ+ community. The anniversary program also has support through the Indiana Arts Commission’s America250 Grant Program and an Indiana Humanities grant.

A separate daytime visit
Visitors who want more history can plan a separate daytime visit to the Indiana Experience. Freedom’s Framework, an exhibit on liberty and equality as the nation expanded west, is scheduled to be on view on the performance date.
The museum’s regular hours end at 5 p.m., before the concert begins. Check the event ticket terms rather than assuming the performance includes exhibit admission.
