At the Indiana History Center, accounts of military and support work sit alongside correspondence home and a memorial to Hoosiers killed or missing in action.

A letter written during the Vietnam War and a recorded interview preserve different kinds of testimony. Hoosier Voices from Vietnam brings both to the Indiana Historical Society, along with artifacts and images that trace the experiences of people who were there.
The exhibition draws on newly recorded and archival interviews, with attention to nonmilitary support as well as military service. The Indiana Historical Society identifies work associated with the United Service Organizations and the American Red Cross among the support roles it explores.
One interview features Mark A. Kurtz, a Hoosier veteran and Air Force photo interpreter. The society says the interview material may also include accounts from members of the Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy and Army, though it does not guarantee that every branch is represented.

In an interactive space, visitors can read a wall of letters written by Hoosiers serving in Vietnam. These are records of communication with people back home, offering a different kind of evidence from the interviews.
The letters, artifacts and images come from the historical society’s archives as well as other institutions and individuals. A memorial wall lists Hoosiers killed or reported missing in action, recognizing people whose own accounts cannot be heard in the exhibition.

Visitors interested in Kurtz’s photographs and papers can explore the Mark A. and Karen B. Kurtz Collection at the center’s William H. Smith Memorial Library. Library access is free; contact the reference desk for an appointment to see collection materials outside the Reference Room.
